Our son John was born with a severe seizure disorder. Over his first year of life, he had 10-20 seizures a day. We tried seven medications and the ketogenic diet; all failed, and his development fell far behind.
When John was one year old, we traveled across the country to the Cleveland Clinic to have him evaluated for epilepsy surgery, even though our home neurologists did not think he was a good candidate. In Cleveland we found a dedicated and exceptionally skilled team who identified the cause of his seizures--a malformation of cortical development in the left parietal lobe--and performed successful resective surgery on November 1, 2010. John has been seizure free ever since and is developing rapidly.
For many dark months it seemed impossible that our son could ever be seizure free or have a chance at a normal life, but it happened. Not every child will become seizure free, but many will, and every child will have their own miracles.
